Rates
It would be wonderful if I could provide you with a table that listed a flat rate for each size of quilt, and you would be able to easily look up the total cost for your project. However, with the wide range within each size of quilt (a twin can be anywhere from 54 x 84 inches up to 68 x 100 inches!) that’s not realistic. It’s necessary to measure your quilt and calculate the area to be quilted to determine the price.
I also offer additional services that you may wish to take advantage of, including binding, custom label creation, and basting. These add to the cost and will increase your invoice total accordingly.
Longarm Quilting
For most Edge to Edge designs, I charge 2.5 cents per square inch. If you choose a more complicated Edge to Edge design that takes longer to stitch out the per square inch fee will increase accordingly.
Custom computerized design prices start at 4 cents per square inch. If you are requesting a more complicated custom design the price per square inch increases accordingly. Why does the cost double for custom work? Because it takes a lot more preparation to set up a custom job, the quilting itself takes more time, and it’s much more hands on during the quilting process.
For example: A quilt top is 60 inches x 80 inches. If you chose to have an edge to edge design, the charge would be 60 x 80 = 4800 x .02 = $96. If you chose a fairly simple custom computerized design, the charge would be 60 x 80 = 4800 x .04 = $192.
Minimum charge
It takes about the same amount of time to load a king sized quilt or a baby quilt or table runner on the longarm frame. To account for this time when quilting a smaller project, my minimum quilting charge is $50. This means that if the size of your project is smaller than 2500 square inches, the quilting rate will be rounded up to $50. If you have multiple small projects that use one larger piece of backing fabric, the minimum charge does not apply.
Batting
I currently have Quilters Dream batting in the 80/20 cotton/poly blend, 100% cotton (in Deluxe or Select loft), and 100% poly.
If you are interested in other fiber varieties of Quilters Dream batting, I can special order them for you if there is enough lead time. Their offerings include Dream Bamboo (bamboo, silk, cotton and botanic tencel), Dream Black (great for darker fabrics), Dream Wool, and Dream Green (made with recycled plastic.) Let me know if you are interested in any of these battings.
Batting is a separate charge and is not included in the square inch price.
Thread
Thread use is included in your square inch price, so there is no additional charge for top thread or bobbin thread. Gambit (my machine) prefers Glide threads so that is what I use.
I love the stand out look of contrasting thread, but I also appreciate the overall texture you get when the thread blends perfectly with the fabric. Let me know where your preference lies so we can find the best fit for your quilt.
Special Order Patterns
I have many quilting designs available, and if you choose one that I already have access to there is no additional charge. If you find a design that you would like to use that I do not already own, there is a charge of half of my cost for the design. For example, if a pantograph design costs $15, you would be charged $7.50.
Edge Trimming
If I am attaching binding to your quilt the cost for trimming the quilt is included in the binding charges. If you would like me to trim your quilt without adding binding, there is a flat fee of $25.
Binding
You can provide prepared binding for me to attach, or you can provide yardage and have me prepare either a bias or straight edge binding and either attach it or send it home with the quilt. The rates for these services are as follows:
Prepare binding from yardage: 8 cents per inch
Machine sew prepared binding only on front or back: 10 cents per inch
Machine sew prepared binding on front and back: 20 cents per inch
Machine sew prepared binding on front and hand sew on back: 50 cents per inch
Custom Labels
I can create custom labels using my embroidery machine or printable fabric. Labels can identify many things: the artist(s) who created the quilt, the event the quilt was created for, and/or the intended recipient, to name a few. If you would like a custom label, we will work together on a design that will beautifully compliment your quilt. The fee for this service is $25 per hour, plus the cost to purchase an embroidery design (if necessary.) The cost to attach it is $5.00. Most designs can be created in less than an hour.
Basting
If you are wishing to do your own quilting but don’t have the space to properly baste your quilt, I can help! My rates for basting a quilt are a $25 set up fee plus .5 cents per square inch. For a 60 x 80 quilt, the charge would be 60 x 80 = 4800 x .005 = $24 + $25 = $49.
Photography
I have a quality DSLR that I use to take photographs of every quilt I have the privilege of working on. I'm not a professional photographer but I do work hard to take quality photos. I will share these photos at no cost with you to use however you would like. I would appreciate it if you could credit me for the photograph(s) and/or the quilting when sharing.
Shipping
I live in Northern California and would love to receive your top and back in the mail if you are not able to drop it off. Please place your materials in a plastic bag (to protect against water damage) and then inside a cardboard box. Securely tape the box closed and label it with my address.
I will return your completed quilt to you in the same manner via USPS Priority Mail. I will check the different rates available to me and choose the most economical. Priority Mail includes $50 of insurance against loss or damage and a tracking number so you can see when your quilt will arrive. If you would like me to purchase additional insurance on your behalf, please indicate the amount requested on your intake form. This is not necessary, but it does provide some peace of mind.
Other Costs
As mentioned above, batting is not included in the square inch price and will be added to the invoice. California requires me to collect a 7.75% sales tax on all services and products provided.
Payment
After the work is complete, I will send you an invoice. I accept cash (for in person pickups), checks, PayPal, and Venmo. Once I receive payment I’ll schedule a time for you to come pick up your quilt or ship it to you as detailed above.
